Did you know that sweat itself doesn’t smell? It’s the bacteria that break down the acids in the sweat that causes the unpleasant odor.
And certain things can cause you to sweat more. Take puberty, for example, it causes your sweat glands to become more active, which can lead to body odor.
Fortunately, there are ways to keep it at bay.

- Take Regular Showers
Shower at least once a day—that’ll prevent bacteria from building up on your skin. Focus on the body parts with the most sweat glands such as the armpits, groin, and buttocks.
Don’t want to or can’t take a shower? Give yourself a sponge bath instead. All you have to do is wipe your body with a soapy sponge or washcloth. From there, wash the soap and oils off with a wet sponge.
- Use an Antiperspirant or Deodorant
Antiperspirants are designed to help prevent body odor. They contain aluminum-based substances that temporarily block the pores that release sweat. That way, there will be less sweat for the odor-causing bacteria to break down.
Alternatively, you can use a deodorant—if anything, it’s one of the best ways to smell good. They’re different from antiperspirants in that they increase skin acidity, which makes them less attractive to bacteria. That is, they’re not meant to stop you from sweating.
For the best results, wipe the deodorant three to four times under your arms.
- Apply Perfume or Cologne
Apply perfume or cologne to pulse spots such as the back of your neck and the crooks of your elbows. The scent will be released as your body heats up.
Resist the urge to rub the product into the skin—that’ll cause the scent to fade and evaporate faster than intended. Remember, all you have to do is spray it on. Or if you want, you can use a roll-on product.
Tip: You can get an affordable perfume online; they’re typically much cheaper than in-store. If you want, you can even shop for wholesale cologne.
- Practice Good Dental Hygiene
Bad breath is often associated with poor oral hygiene. That’s why it’s so important to brush and floss your teeth regularly.
More specifically, you want to brush with toothpaste at least twice a day and floss once a day. The goal is to remove all trapped food before it decays to become a feeding ground for bacteria.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well—that’ll prevent bacteria on the surface from releasing volatile sulfur compounds.
