What makes Prenatal Massage different?

Here are some details about prenatal massages. There may be certain positions that should be avoided depending on where one is in her pregnancy journey. It is not always possible to lie on your stomach in the second trimester. You can avoid this position completely. You can have the therapist use specific pillows, tables, or bolsters to create space around your belly.

As the client is further along in her pregnancy, it is not recommended that they lie flat on their backs. This is due to the possibility of occlusion in the trunk area by the pressure exerted by the larger/heavier uterus. You can use bolsters to allow the person to hold their trunk in an inclined position. You might prop one hip higher than the others (as in “quarter side-lying”).

Side-lying can be a great position to massage. A pillow or bolster can be used between the knees, under your abdomen, and/or by the client to hug the pillow. This is a great way to provide support, safety, and comfort. These options should be discussed with the client and Therapist. The client and Therapist should discuss any side effects that might occur during the session. Pregnant women may prefer to have a seated massage with an opening in their abdomen.

Post Prenatal Massage Care

Massage “Post-care” is important for all clients, especially pregnant women. It includes proper hydration, healthy eating, gentle stretching, and light walking. It is important to eat healthy foods after a massage. These could be green vegetables, protein and non-processed/sugar-free foods. You can prevent stiffness and soreness by gentle stretching. Post-massage soreness can be reduced by light, non-strenuous exercise. Be gentle with your body and don’t overtax it.
