Secrets to Success: A Career Counselor is Willing to Tell You What No One Else Will…

When I began playing guitar at age 10, I never thought I’d actually get to play music for a living- a really nice living at that. I have somehow defied the odds- of the millions of musicians in America, I’m in the yearly pay range of the top 1%. I am living my dream. But, how did I get this gig? How did I get here? How is it that I have reached this goal, and some have not? There’s nowhere to apply for my job. There’s not a program at ITT Tech with job placement. And, despite the fact that I get asked to ‘put a name in the hat’ if I hear of a gig, there is no magical hat raffle.

Like many aspiring musicians, growing up, I had the dream, the drive, and the talent to “make it” in music, but I didn’t really know where to start. When I finished college, I knew that I wanted to continue to pursue music as a career. So, I Googled things like, “How to get a gig in Nashville” and “Guitar player auditions,” which delivered a lot of obscure results for cruise ship gigs and spammy Craigslist ads. I then thought, maybe there’s a well-connected guitarist in Nashville that can mentor me, or that I could take guitar lessons with. Someone like Brent Mason or Jeff King. I called around to the local music stores and asked about their guitar teaching staff. I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Some time passed, and I eventually gave up on my search for a mentor. I then began to get more and more work, strategically moving from one gig to the next, and, thankfully, things worked out for me. But, I know that a mentor’s guidance would have saved me years of learning lessons the hard way, and helped me to avoid some serious pitfalls.

In Music City, USA, I couldn’t find anyone who would mentor me! I was willing to drive any distance and pay any amount of money if I could just sit down with a top musician for one day.  We created ThatsMyGig to change that. We have a passion to train, educate, and personally mentor gig-seeking musicians. Here, you can connect with a professional in the music industry for career counseling. You can connect with Carrie Underwood’s utility musician, Tim McGraw’s guitar tech, Billy Currington’s bassist, a celebrity stylist, or with Jake Owen’s guitarist (hey, that’s me!).

What is career counseling? Career counseling is more than just connecting with a professional in the music industry, it’s about developing an active, ongoing relationship. Before the session even starts, I program your contact info into my phone. That means that anytime someone contacts me looking for a guitarist or bassist for their upcoming tour, you will now be in the running with a strong recommendation for that gig. I don’t just answer the phone, I also actively work to help you pursue your goals. Before that day, we never knew each other. From that moment forward, you are on my list.
