TMG: So many students around the world dream of attending Berklee College. In your experience, what are the key characteristics and habits Berklee instilled in you as a musician that helped you achieve success?
KURT: I think that since Berklee is such a big school, there isn’t a general “blanket” characteristic I would say is specific to them. There are so many students attending. You’ll find some students interested in reggae and a different group of students only interested in jazz. I would say one common thing everyone at Berklee learns, is to constantly practice. Each student spends hours a day in the practice rooms. I remember conversations between students— “I practiced 7 hours today.” And another would reply, “Oh I practiced 8 1/2 hours today.” Things like that. One thing I personally learned was how to teach myself musical skills. With Berklee being such a large school and hundreds of teachers being there, you really will only get out of it what you put in. I made sure to stay pro-active in my practicing and always went to my professors during their office hours to ask for help. I was always trying to learn more.
